Why consistent executive communication is important

Whether it’s participating in top-tier media interviews, speaking at major conferences, or building employee morale at town halls, consistent executive comms matters.

However, very few executives fully grasp the true value of effective communications.

Some CEOs view communications as a minor part of their job or simply the ‘cost of doing business.’ While many younger founders and CEOs see it as a way to elevate their personal brand – not necessarily their company’s mission.

However, consistent communication throughout the entire organization is critical. It is why clients trust you and stay with you. And it also plays a substantial role in retaining and recruiting talent.

And while you will have a set number of people who are allowed to speak to media, everyone in your organisation is going to talk about where they work, what they do and what their company is all about. Without consistent communications, what will they say?

Building consistency
Once you’ve helped your executives understand the value of consistent communications, the initial reaction is usually to do more – more media interviews, more conference keynotes or more town halls. But the first step should be determining what to say and how it can help the company. Building this corporate narrative will ensure all leaders are speaking with one coordinated message.

When developing a new corporate narrative, start and end with the CEO. In between, interview the leadership team and other key stakeholders. By taking this approach, you will find that it further commits executives to the narrative, and it exposes where the leadership team is communicating inconsistently.

Once you have aligned on a consistent, repeatable narrative, then it is a good time to get your leaders trained e.g. media or internal engagement training. And a tip here, to get any needed buy-in is to share examples of the best communicators. Find who they admire and respect.
